Creation Frustration? Here’s How You Get Out of That
Creative inspiration is fickle; it ebbs and flows, but never in the way we want or need.
Which leads to the biggest issue: what do you do when you need to be creative and create content, but you’re staring at your computer with nothing but a completely blank mind?
Trying to force things, I can comfortably say, is NOT the answer (take it from someone who has been there, tried that, and came up feeling even more frustrated).
So, what is the answer? It’s a bit different for everyone, again, creativity is fickle like that, it’s a personal thing, BUT here are a few ways I’ve found that help me when I’m creatively stunted:
Get Out and Away From the Four Walls
You know what doesn’t help the flow of creativity? Stagnation. It’s quite literally the opposite of flow.
This means that the office space you’re in, whether at home, on site, or at a coworking space, is not going to cut it. You have to get out of your everyday work environment, get moving and do something to put your stressed-out brain at ease.
A light walk or “adventure” in or around your neighbourhood gets you moving, not stuck in one place, and gives your mind other things to focus on and other information to absorb. Have a quaint walk by the water, or a local park, or better yet, go people watch. Inspiration finds us when we least expect it, so why would we assume to find it within our rigid routines?
Put Your Headphones On
Let’s say getting outside is not a viable option; it happens, and now you’re still stuck inside, feeling the creation frustration drive you even crazier. Now what?
Your next step, headphones.
In-ear, over-ear, whichever you gravitate towards, put them on, cue some high-energy favourites and get grooving. If you can, quite literally rock out, pop out, whatever genre you vibe with the most, but if your space is a bit more public or big movements are not an option, give yourself some space and time to do a little shoulder movement or head nodding.
Music in itself is a creative expression, and for 99% of people, it makes us feel something. This means you move from your headspace to your heartspace. And the heartspace is where creation and creativity thrive, yes, even when it comes to content for your business.
When All Else Fails, It’s a Tomorrow Problem
You know the saying, “if it doesn’t get done today, it’ll still be there tomorrow”?
So will any creative tasks you’re stressing out about. True power is knowing when to walk away, because your mental health is not worth writing a blog or posts for Instagram.
If you change your environment, listen to some healing tunes, and you’re still getting nowhere, it’s time to call it a day. An evening decompressing, a good night’s sleep, and a new day will help you truly reset.
A fresh set of eyes from a new day can give you the time and space you need to come up with a different perspective or even ideas of how to approach creating.
Remember, creativity is not an ever-flowing source; it’s more like a plant you grow and nurture. This is because the creativity comes from you, and the more you nurture yourself, give yourself grace and peace, the more inspired you’ll feel.
Creative flows are really more about listening to your mind and body than the actual creation itself.
You create from abundance, not lack, so if you’re running off fumes, overtired, and on edge, what do you expect will be the result?
