Social Media is a Full-Time Job, But It Shouldn’t Run Your Life
Okay, that’s it! I’ve had it!
If I see one more video about “being on vacation but you’re a social media manager”, it’ll be too soon.
As someone who has run multiple social media accounts in a professional capacity for years, let me make this perfectly clear:
A vacation means not working, and if you’re still posting on your company’s socials, then you are not on vacation.
This isn’t “funny”, it’s a violation of your personal time, and it means that you are missing a key part of your social media marketing plan, “What To Do When I’m Gone”.
One Person Holding All The Access Is A Problem Waiting to Happen
“But I’m the only one who can access the accounts!”
But, why?
Having 2-3 core people with access to social accounts means that when you are away, delegation comes into play. Not to mention, if something were to happen to your device or even you, this means that one of the other core people who have access can take over your duties in the interim.
Remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail, or in this case, plan to go radio silent!
Not Everything Needs to Be Posted Manually; Scheduling Exists
There are numerous scheduling tools available for sharing content.
Later, Sendible, Hootsuite, and Sprout Social are all examples of content scheduling tools you can incorporate into your content marketing process to save you time in the day-to-day and especially when you’re away from your phone and laptop (for work purposes).
Even using the on-platform content scheduling capabilities is a free and easy way to incorporate scheduling into your process, either routinely or, if you prefer, for time off/absences.
So, with all the scheduling tools available, why would we choose to manually post if we don’t have to?
Whatever Happened to Boundaries?
The “hustle and grind” mentality was never sustainable; all it did was play into instant gratification and promote burnout as a reward for financial success, which, ew.
Yes, marketing is a constant battle of “always staying on your toes”, if that’s how you CHOOSE to define it, because somewhere along the way we forgot that our marketing is what we make it.
Forget what the “gurus” and “thought leaders” are pushing and all the false promises they make to sell their programs! Real marketing success stems from knowing your audience and having clear, consistent messaging. You set the pace for your marketing, you set the standards. Just because you CAN post all the time doesn’t mean you should, and it definitely doesn’t mean it should override your personal time.
I even struggle with this, but you can’t work to solve a problem if you don’t first acknowledge it.
The little things add up over time, and especially when they involve our time! The time you spend outside of work is important, as it gives your brain and body a break, it’s a critical recovery and reenergizing time.
Just because you own your own business doesn’t mean it needs to take over every aspect of your life.
You started your own business to do what you love and give yourself the flexibility you need, not for it to put you right back where you started, burnt out.
