Why I Niched Down (and You Should Too)

When I started my business, I was more focused on getting clients than necessarily focused on getting the RIGHT clients.

And that’s okay because it was something I needed to learn and grow into, developing more into my business foundation.

When I first started taking clients, I wasn’t too picky; I was just happy to be doing my own thing, to be building my business and building my credibility as a bookkeeping business.

That continued for a while. I tried to help as many people in as many different industries, but what I didn’t realize was that it was burning me out quickly.

Suddenly, I was dreading work, unmotivated and turning on my computer felt like the hardest thing I could be doing.

There also became a clear divide within my business, for clients I loved to work on and clients I had to muster up all my energy to complete their work (which of course I still completed, but it just took so much more mental energy and effort).

Something needed to change.

I started looking at the trends and the different ways I approached my business, and that’s when I noticed it.

There was so much more enjoyment for the creative clients in my business than I did for the non-creative-based clients.

I thought to myself, what was the harm in niching down? I’d heard so much about it from fellow business owners and business coaches that it was time for me to try it for myself.

So, I focused on creative industries, the makers, the hobbyists, the marketers, and the creators, and everything clicked. 

As my clients changed and shifted, I felt better about the work itself, and a lot of the anxiety and apathy I was feeling towards my business subsided. I felt more focused and purposeful, which gave me the reignition I needed to move forward professionally.

Wanting to help everyone is a nice thought, but it’s not realistic. You won’t connect with everyone, and everyone won't connect with you, but it’s about finding your people. 

Just because I selected a niche years ago doesn’t mean it doesn’t evolve or grow. Your niche and your offerings will not only attract JUST that niche, but you may learn more about yourself and your business.

This year, my niche expanded. Not only am I focusing on creative industries, but I found that the more involved I became in health and wellness in my personal life, the more I became interested in that industry from a professional lens. 

I see similarities in the work, in the atmospheres, in the element of care and purpose behind these industries, and suddenly it all became more clear that it was time to grow my niche as I was growing my business.

The power of niching down impacts more than just your business, but also you, as the business owner.

And purpose is power, motivation, and sustainability.
